Wisdom is Vindicated by All Her Children

This meditation is based on a passage for December 5, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Luke 7:28-35

Reflection and Question: It makes sense that John the Baptist is very present in the lectionary texts during Advent. After all, John announced the coming of Jesus and so his story and his message fit into our anticipation of Jesus’ coming at Christmas. In these words of Jesus reported only by Luke, the Pharisees and others are criticized for trying to have it both ways: John’s Nazirite lifestyle is too stringent, while Jesus’ enjoyment of food, drink and company is too lax. Jesus concludes his biting sermon, “Wisdom is vindicated by all her children.” In what way is wisdom vindicated by all her children?

Prayer: O come, thou Wisdom from on high, and order all things far and nigh;
To us the path of knowledge show and cause in her the ways to go.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
